Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Data Science in Health Systems Engineering

Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering

Florida A&M University - Florida State University College of Engineering

Permanent, Tenure-Track Position

About the Department and College

The Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering (IME) at the Florida A&M University (FAMU)-Florida State University (FSU) College of Engineering invites applications from highly qualified individuals for a tenure-track faculty with research and teaching interests in data science and machine learning. Applicants should have a demonstrated experience in health systems related areas including, but not limited to, medical decision making, healthcare delivery, medical image data analysis, causal discovery/inference and precision/personalized medicine. We are seeking faculty candidates for an assistant professor position; however, exceptional candidates will be considered for higher ranks. The anticipated appointment time is August 2024.

The IME Department currently has 19 faculty members, 34 PhD students, 106 MS students, 162 undergraduate students, and annual research expenditures exceeding $3.3M. The two universities and outstanding research facilities in the affiliated research buildings/centers provide opportunities for collaboration with faculty in Computer Science, Scientific Computing, Statistics, High-Performance Materials Institute (HPMI), Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP), the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS), National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), and FSU College of Medicine. Applicants for this position are expected to collaborate closely with Biomedical Engineering within the college, and College of Medicine outside the college.

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is the nexus of two major public universities, each with a distinct mission but focused on world-class engineering education and research. Created by the Florida Legislature in 1982, the joint institution is the college of engineering for both Florida A&M and Florida State universities. This unique combination of focus, resources and mission from our parent institutions has created on our campus a truly innovative atmosphere that leverages the benefits of the traditional HBCU model with the innovations of an R-1 public research university. After completing pre-requisites at their home institution, FAMU and FSU students learn, study and research together at our independent campus with joint-appointed faculty and staff. Students graduate from their enrolling university and from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Both FAMU and FSU are part of the State University System of Florida and are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Additionally, all six of the college’s eligible undergraduate degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess an earned Ph.D. in industrial engineering, operations research, computer science, statistics, biomedical informatics, electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline, and demonstrate documented potential for outstanding research.  Successful candidates must have a demonstrated track record of high-quality research as evidenced by high-impact publications and must exhibit strong potential or established record of external funding. Strong methodological background and research and teaching interests in data science, analytics, machine learning, statistics, optimization and simulation are preferred. Domains of particular interest are in applications of health systems engineering, however, candidates with strong backgrounds in data science with applications to other related areas will also be considered.

Responsibilities

Successful candidates are expected to develop research programs that are internationally recognized with significant and sustained funding, incorporate interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers across campus, and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence. The successful candidate must also demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and mentoring M.S. and Ph.D. students, and participate in service activities within the department, the university and the profession.
