The Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Iowa (https://bme.engineering.uiowa.edu/) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment with an anticipated start date of August 2025. All ranks will be considered, and exceptional candidates at the rank of Full Professor will be considered for appointment as the Roy J. Carver Professor in Biomedical Engineering, an endowed professorship. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2024; however, applications will be accepted until February 1, 2025.

Our department seeks visionary individuals who are integrating engineering, the biological sciences, and translational medicine to promote scientific discovery and the development of clinical technologies that advance healthcare. We aim to enhance the department’s integrative research and educational programs by hiring a core faculty member with expertise in the areas of respiratory and pulmonary biomedical engineering.

The Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth.  A recent philanthropic gift to the department from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust has provided resources to hire several new faculty, rapidly increase the size of the doctoral program, and develop new research foci in the areas of respiratory and pulmonary biomedical engineering (broadly defined). Department offices are located in a new, state-of-the-art, 65,000 square foot annex connected to the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences, which is located centrally on campus and is close to the Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, and the Colleges of Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in biomedical engineering or a related discipline and should demonstrate potential for (Assistant Professor rank) or a strong track record of (Associate or Full Professor ranks) extramural funding. The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized research program that includes respiratory and pulmonary biomedical engineering, to participate in the teaching and service missions of the department, and to follow the University of Iowa’s strong tradition of collaboration across disciplines.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication, teaching, and leadership skills to the benefit of our department’s mission.  A strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching, advising, and student success is essential. Teaching responsibilities include participation in and development of both undergraduate and graduate courses, and strong engagement in a core curriculum that serves to define biomedical engineering for future generations. Supervision of doctoral students and academic advising of trainees at all levels is also expected.   

The College of Engineering has an established international reputation for biomedical research led by four of its research units:  the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging, the Iowa Technology Institute, and IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering. These centers help fuel a highly interdisciplinary research enterprise across campus that includes the Carver College of Medicine. The Carver College of Medicine is highly ranked among public medical schools in NIH dollars and NIH grants per faculty member, with over 250 faculty laboratories in 12 dedicated buildings including 450,000 square feet of wet lab bench space. The opportunities to impact both fundamental and translational biomedical research as a faulty member in biomedical engineering at the University of Iowa are many.
