The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tufts University seeks applications for the endowed Berger Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering. The position is expected to be filled at the level of Professor, and accomplished faculty at the level of Associate Professor are strongly encouraged to apply. We seek established scholars who are known for leveraging data analytics to provide engineering solutions to society’s most pressing infrastructure challenges. Broad areas of interest include sustainable energy transitions; climate, water, and health; and resilient infrastructure and communities. Tufts has a strong foundation of applied data science through the engineering disciplines and across the University. Candidates are encouraged to explore our campus-wide initiatives including Data-Intensive Science Center , Tufts-Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science , Data Driven Decision Making @ Tufts , Tufts CREATE Solutions, and Offshore Wind at Tufts .
The Berger Chair will join a Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering that is focused on applying engineering and science to help society anticipate and respond to emerging challenges at the intersection of infrastructure, the environment, and people. The department has 17 tenure-line faculty and 9 additional full-time research and teaching faculty. The Department is situated in the School of Engineering which aspires to be An Engine for Good .
The Berger Chair search is part of a broader hiring campaign by the School of Engineering to grow its research and educational capabilities in engineering for sustainability. The School is deeply committed to developing pragmatic, innovative solutions for environmentally and socially responsible use of energy and materials, while assessing the full impact of engineered systems on built and natural environments. Currently, tenure-stream faculty searches are ongoing in four of the six academic departments centered on the common themes of climate change and sustainable materials. Tufts' School of Engineering (SOE) distinguishes itself by the interdisciplinary focus and integrative nature of its engineering education and research programs, within the intellectually rich environment of both a "Research I" university and a top-ranked undergraduate institution. The past ten years have been a period of extraordinary growth for SOE at Tufts, with recruitment of over half of its current tenured and tenure-track faculty members and a more than three-fold increase in research productivity.
