    Percent time: From 17% to 33% for one, three unit, semester-long course depending on whether the course is co-taught

    Position description

    The College of Engineering recently launched a comprehensive aerospace engineering program, anchored by the new undergraduate major (presently hosted in the Department of Mechanical Engineering) and fueled by the increasing societal significance of aerospace-related technologies.

    The aerospace engineering program invites applications to teach one in-person, 3-unit AERO ENG 193: Special Topics in Aerospace Engineering course in the spring 2025 semester. The topic for the Spring 2025 course is "The NewSpace Economy."

    "NewSpace" is a term of art signifying the tight connection between the technological and economic aspects of space exploration/habitation, which undergirds the explosive growth in space-related activities.

    COURSE OBJECTIVES
    To introduce aerospace-focused students (majoring in engineering or business) in a cogent and comprehensive manner to select topics related to the engineering systems, processes, and practices encountered in space systems (including flight, remote sensing and communications, space life) with emphasis on the interplay between technology and entrepreneurship. To educate the next generation of Berkeley's engineering and business leaders on the connection between technology, intellectual property, planning, regulation, business forecasting, and financing, in the rapidly expanding space sector.

    INSTRUCTOR DUTIES
    In addition to classroom teaching and preparation, general duties may include (but are not limited to) managing and mentoring graders and/or graduate student instructors (teaching assistants), holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website.

    Candidates under consideration will be contacted by the Mechanical Engineering Department. The aerospace engineering program seeks candidates whose experiences in professional practice and teaching has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Master's degree or equivalent international degree at the time of application.

    Preferred qualifications



    • Expertise in space technologies through an engineering or science degree, as well as work experience in the space industry.

    • Familiarity through education or professional involvement with the contemporary space business sector.

    • Evidence of successful past involvement in teaching at the university level and/or a strong commitment to instruction or mentorship.
