  • Funded PhD Positions in Engineering Management & Systems Engineering
    Engineering Management & Systems Engineering
    Old Dominion University

At Old Dominion University's Engineering Management & Systems Engineering (EMSE), we are hiring two PhD students to start in January 2025 or shortly afterward. Interested applicants, please email Dr. Ambrosio Valencia-Romero (a1valenc@odu.edu) with your CV and specify which of the following areas you are most interested in:

    1. Modeling, simulation, and augmentation of collective systems: This research analyzes engineering systems with federated features to identify the underlying hindrances impacting their operation and how to tackle them for them to accomplish their missions with minimal technical, environmental, and social costs. Great incoming Ph.D. students would bring computational modeling, operations engineering, and systems-of-systems thinking expertise.

    2. Assessment and mitigation of strategic risk in engineering systems: This research explores how risk compounds across inter-technical, inter-operational, and inter-organizational layers of the engineering systems design process, how it evolves within a changing societal and environment context, and how to communicate it in ways that prompt key actors to decide on the best control measures. Great incoming Ph.D. students would bring risk analysis, engineering economics, engineering statistics, and probabilistic design experience.

    3. Implementation theory in engineering systems design: This research focuses on designing and testing mechanisms that help mitigate the emergence of unfavorable dynamics across multiple levels and stages of the engineering systems design process. Great incoming Ph.D. students would bring collaborative design, decision theory, and human subject research expertise.

Applicants with bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering (particularly in engineering management, systems engineering, or adjacent, e.g., industrial engineering, mechanical, electrical engineering, engineering design, civil engineering, environmental engineering, computer science, software engineering) or those in the process of completing one are preferred.
