    Job Description


    The Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applications from experienced, accomplished, and visionary individuals to serve as Chair of the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) starting in June of 2024. The Chair is expected to provide leadership in departmental education, research, and outreach activities in alignment with the strategic plan of the College and the University.

    Specific responsibilities include:


    1. planning and executing strategic initiatives for the department;

    2. mentoring and supporting faculty and staff;

    3. supporting key research thrusts in the department and the college;

    4. fostering interdisciplinary research and industry partnerships;

    5. improving curriculum design and leading accreditation efforts;

    6. demonstrating commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives;

    7. working closely with the advisory board of the department;

    8. performing research and scholarly activities; and

    9. teaching courses in related areas.

    Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities



    • Record of scholarly accomplishments including peer-reviewed publications and an externally funded research program

    • Strong leadership and communication skills and be able to articulate a vision for advancing the education and research mission of the department through partnerships with the industry and the government.

    • Strong commitment to shared governance practices, transparency, consensus building, and collaborative leadership values.


     


    Minimum Qualifications - Education or training


    Earned doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field and be eligible for an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.
