  • Faculty Positions – Advanced Manufacturing
    College of Engineering
    University of Michigan

The College of Engineering at the University of Michigan invites applications for full-time tenure-track

or tenured positions in advanced manufacturing to begin on or after August 26, 2024. As part of a

new initiative, the University of Michigan Advanced Manufacturing Institute is being formed, and

multiple faculty will be hired. These faculty may be rostered in any department within the College of Engineering, or with joint appointments, depending on the best fit for the applicant.

We are particularly interested in hiring senior or mid-career level faculty who: (1) have a

distinguished record of foundational or applied research at the cutting edge of advanced

manufacturing, and (2) are passionate about leading or supporting center-scale research activities in

advanced manufacturing. The ideal candidates will articulate a compelling vision of how they will

work collaboratively with current Michigan faculty, and leverage the University’s existing strengths to

advance a bold direction for the future of manufacturing. The proposed efforts should be aligned

with our people-first engineering ethos, where we strive to apply excellent engineering fundamentals,

integrated expertise, and equity-centered values to reimagine what engineering can be, close critical

gaps, and elevate all people. Information about our vision, mission, and values can be found at:

http://strategicvision.engin.umich.edu/. Possible topic areas for center-scale research efforts

include, but are not limited to: biomedical/pharmaceuticals manufacturing, distributed

manufacturing, electric vehicles, human-centered manufacturing, semiconductors, smart

manufacturing, sustainable manufacturing, and manufacturing to support quantum computing. In

addition to having strong research credentials and vision, candidates must also demonstrate a

commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, service/engagement, and diversity equity

and inclusion (DEI). Learn more about DEI at Michigan Engineering:

    https://www.engin.umich.edu/culture/diversity-equity-inclusion/.

The University of Michigan is one of the world’s leading research universities, with over $1.86B in

research expenditures (FY2023). It is ranked #1 among public research universities by the National

Science Foundation, and 3rd best U.S. public university by US News and World Report (2023). The

City of Ann Arbor, where the University is situated, is highly rated as a family friendly

    best-place-to-live.

The College of Engineering has a robust history of exploring new ideas at the intersection of

disciplines, including several new center-level efforts: a $11M DOE EFRC probing the

chemo-mechanical phenomena underlying the processing and electrochemical dynamics of ceramic

ion conductors for clean energy systems; a $18M NSF MRSEC focused on developing (1) new

layered materials with tailored nanoscale structures for quantum information processing, and (2)

new recyclable polymeric materials capable of self-healing with potential applications; a $30M NSF

STC – Center for Complex Particle Systems; and a $150 million Electric Vehicle Center (EV Center)

being launched to support the modernization of the auto industry and support the establishment of a

more robust EV ecosystem. The College is renowned for its leadership in manufacturing, in part, due

to its strategic geographic location at the heart of the U.S. manufacturing industry. It also boasts an

on-campus 20,000 sq. ft. facility dedicated to manufacturing research and education.

All application materials should be submitted electronically at

    https://deptapps.engin.umich.edu/facultycandidate/apply?dept=222500&searchID=49. Materials

should include: (1) a cover letter, (2) a detailed CV, (3) a statement of teaching philosophy and

center-scale educational vision, (4) a statement of research interests and center-scale research

vision, (5) a DEI statement that demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

    through scholarship/research, teaching/mentoring, and/or service/engagement, (6) up to three

representative publications, and (7) the names and contact information of 3 references. Candidates

should clearly indicate the rank and department(s) to which they would like to be hired in their cover

    letter.

Review of applications will begin January 4, 2024 until the positions are filled. Offers for this

appointment are contingent on successful completion of a background screening. The University of

Michigan is supportive of the needs of dual career couples and is an Affirmative Action/Equal

Opportunity Employer. Women and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply. For any

questions, please contact the chair of the strategic faculty search committee, Professor Chinedum

    Okwudire (okwudire@umich.edu).
