    The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey California seeks applications for multiple tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Ideal applicants should demonstrate experience leading externally funded defense-relevant research programs and have a track record of effective graduate-level instruction, or, for junior applicants, potential for the same.   The department has opportunities for applicants specializing in research areas within mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, as well as materials sciences and engineering. Preferences will be given to the candidates who have an academic background in the following topical areas: (1) materials sciences and engineering, (2) vibration and structural dynamics, (3) aerospace dynamics and control, (4) ship design and naval architecture, (5) fluid mechanics and/or thermal sciences, (6) engineering design and (7) mechatronics.


    The Department seeks candidates who demonstrate both a record of outstanding scholarship and contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are particularly interested in attracting candidates who can contribute to the diversity of the NPS community through their teaching, scholarship, and service.


    The Naval Postgraduate School is an accredited graduate school whose students are drawn from the armed forces and civilian agencies of the United States and other countries.  Tenure-track faculty members are expected to teach introductory and advanced graduate classes and maintain an academic portfolio of naval-relevant basic and applied research, publication, and service.

    The minimum required qualifications are:



    • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field at the time of appointment,

    • Eligibility for a Secret clearance, and

    • U.S. Citizenship that should be clearly stated in your application.
