    Salary/Position Classification



    • $100,000+ dependent on experience and rank for the 9-month, Tenured Associate or Full Professor.  

      • Additional compensation for the role of Department Chair of $15,000 will be paid over 12 months and an additional one month's salary ($11,111+) to be paid May 16 - August 15. 



    • 40 hours per week

    Purpose of Position


    The Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Chair. The Chair will play a central role in fostering a vibrant academic environment, growing externally funded research, and building industry connections. The department has recently been renamed and expanded to include graduate programs in energy engineering, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to help establish a broader mission and vision for the department. Subject to approval by the University and State Board of Higher Education, this is a tenured position, and an appointment will be made at a rank consistent with experience and qualifications. Successful candidates will have qualifications consistent with the rank of Full or Associate Professor.


    Duties & Responsibilities



    • Industry Engagement: Develop and nurture relationships with industry partners, ensuring that our programs align with the evolving needs of the energy and petroleum sectors.

    • Faculty Mentoring: Provide guidance, support, and mentoring to faculty, fostering an environment of academic excellence and innovation.

    • Student Recruitment: Spearhead initiatives to attract and enroll students into our undergraduate and graduate programs.

    • Program Development: Work closely with faculty to review and improve the curriculum, ensuring it remains current and relevant.

    • Administrative Leadership: Serve as a member of the College of Engineering and Mines leadership team, manage departmental budgets, oversee staff, and represent the department at institutional and external events.

    • Strategic Planning: Develop a well-defined vision for the department's future and a strategic roadmap for accomplishing its objectives. Demonstrate an understanding of how the department aligns with the overarching goals of both UND and the energy sector in the state of North Dakota.

    Minimum Requirements



    • Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a closely related field.

    • 10 years of combined professional experience in the energy industry or an academic setting.

    • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

    Preferred Qualifications



    • 5 years of academic or industry leadership experience with a record of mentoring and developing employees.

    • Evidence of successful collaboration with industry partners.

    • Evidence of a strong record of published research, external research funding, or other contributions to the field.
