Dr. Heldebrant’s current research involves the design and development of switchable ionic liquids that chemically capture acid gases such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide from power plant gas emissions. Dr. Heldebrant’s CO2-Binding Organic Liquids (CO2BOLs) have shown potential to capture CO2 and SO2 using up to 50% less energy compared to existing gas capture technologies.
Dr. Heldebrant also investigates the physical and chemical properties of amine boranes as potential high energy density fuels for hydrogen fuel cells. Dr. Heldebrant currently works on the synthesis, characterization and performance of amine boranes such as ammonia borane and ammonium borohydride for hydrogen storage applications.
