This position is intended for professionals with substantial experience in industry, consulting, or government, or for academics whose work focuses on applied, industry-relevant transportation problems or emerging analytical methods in the field.

The successful candidate will strengthen Cornell’s transportation program through innovative teaching, applied research, and engagement with emerging technologies and societal needs in areas such as:

  • Advanced transportation systems modeling and simulation that could involve integrated machine learning and network equilibrium/simulation, surrogate models/ reduced order emulators or Bayesian or interpretable machine learning.
  • Simulation and optimization of on-demand transportation services or novel transit systems and sustainable transportation
  • Urban mobility and congestion management
  • Integration of transportation, energy, environmental and public health, and land use
  • Autonomous and connected vehicle systems
  • Transportation resilience and climate adaptation
  • Data-driven transportation policy and decision support
  • Freight and logistics modeling
  • Cybersecurity and logistics systems
  • Cutting edge computational methods including domain informed neural networks, explainable AI, hierarchical reinforcement learning and multi-scale optimization

This broad set of interest areas reflects our openness to diverse expertise that can strengthen and complement our programs. We do not expect any single individual to contribute across all these topics. The list is illustrative and not intended to be exhaustive.

A successful applicant will be expected to do some of the following:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in transportation systems analysis, modeling, and planning, with emphasis on emerging technologies and methods.
  • Develop new curricular offerings that integrate advanced data analytics, AI/ML methods, and simulation tools into transportation engineering education.
  • Lead student-centered, project-based learning that incorporates real-world data, industry challenges, and stakeholder perspectives.
  • Collaborate with faculty and external partners to design applied research and capstone projects addressing contemporary transportation challenges.
  • Foster connections with industry, government, and non-profits to ensure that students gain practical insight into evolving transportation systems and policies.

This is a 12-month position that is anticipated to be a five-year renewal position based on performance and the availability of funding. The position may include research activities in addition to teaching and advising, depending on the candidate’s interest. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to interact broadly with faculty and students within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the College of Engineering, Cornell Tech, and the Cornell Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future.  It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin in the Spring or Summer of 2026.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Candidates must have significant industrial or governmental experience and hold a master’s or Ph.D. degree.  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Application materials must be submitted on-line at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/30993

Applicants should submit a cover letter (that highlights their practical experience, their teaching potential and any particular research interests), curriculum vitae and provide contact information for at least three references. Questions can be directed to cee_search@cornell.edu
