Department and College/School Information
The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Texas at Arlington offers BS, MS and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering. With a student enrollment of close to 400 students, 15 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 1 teaching faculty, the Department is poised for rapid expansion. Research expenditure now exceeds $300,000 per faculty and is expected to grow. Guided by the University’s Strategic Plan of Bold Solutions, Global Impact and major themes of Health, and The Human Condition and Data-driven Discovery, the Department fosters interdisciplinary research and teaching to accelerate these thematic areas. The Department also enjoys a joint graduate program in biomedical engineering with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and recently established a MD-PhD program with the Texas Christian University Medical School. The geographical location of the Department is ideal for collaboration with many major medical institutions and facilities that are located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor tenure-track position to teach, conduct research, and service in bioengineering with emphasis on machine learning applied to experimental bioengineering. The ideal candidate would have a background that combines computational methods with wet lab experience. Of particular interest are candidates with a background in systems biology who have informatics skills but can also generate and validate synthetic nucleic acid or protein constructs in the lab. Candidates with exceptional strengths and expertise in either computational or experimental approaches will be considered even if they lack expertise in both. The candidate is expected to create synergy with existing departmental efforts in cancer and cardiovascular research and nanomedicine. We seek faculty members with outstanding qualifications who strongly favor collaborative research and share the University’s core values of high standards of excellence in innovative and collaborative research, combined with fostering an open and inclusive environment that promotes participation of underrepresented groups in research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will establish a nationally and internationally recognized independent research program evidenced by publications and external research funding; develop and work collaboratively on academic courses and increase the visibility of the department and profession through research, teaching, national relationship building, collaboration, and networking: develop collaborative research and educational activities with the Multi-Interprofessionnal Center for Health Informatics (https://michi.uta.edu/). The individual will contribute to and participate in fostering a culture of inclusion in support of the university diversity goals.
- A PhD in bioengineering, quantitative biology, computational biology or related field or current enrollment in one such doctoral program with a completion date no later than six months of hire.
- Evidence of cultural competence and demonstrated success working with diverse populations is required.
Examples of preferred qualifications are as follows, but are not limited to these:
- Experience in the area of machine learning guided experimental bioengineering.
- A strong background working with inferential statistics, machine learning, data analytics, emerging technologies (AI, VR, etc.). Expertise with modern deep learning frameworks such as pytorch, tensorflow, and keras is preferred.
- Experience in bioengineering research design and research methods with a demonstrated ability to publish research findings
- A strong background and experience in proteomics.
- A strong background in experimental systems biology.
