The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Batten College of Engineering & Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, is inviting applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Coastal Engineering starting in Fall 2025. This is a 10-month annual appointment.

Hampton Roads experiences one of the highest rates of sea level rise on the East Coast, making it a prime research area to study the effects of rising waters on coastal infrastructures and resilience. The region houses critical infrastructure including military bases and major ports. This Assistant Professor will play a critical role in the BCET's strategic vision for tackling global challenges related to sea level rise and coastal resilience. The primary objective is to strengthen and expand the research expertise while increasing sponsored research in a multidisciplinary field. They will also play a key role in supporting and promoting the growth of various educational programs, including the Coastal Engineering Certificate Program (CECP) in the CEE Department.

This Assistant Professor will conduct research on following topics to establish an externally funded research program focused on climate-adaptive coastal structures:
  1. Design of coastal and near-coast structures.
  2. Interactions between structures and with near-shore processes.
  3. Structures life estimation.
  4. Engineering challenges in a coastal environment.
This role will focus on researching the design and performance of coastal structures, including breakwaters, jetties, flood barriers, naval constructions, and offshore wind structures. They will apply engineering principles such as fluid dynamics, wave mechanics, wave-structure interactions, sediment transport, and sustainable and resilient infrastructure design. Familiarity with advanced computational methods, numerical modeling, laboratory work, and field studies is expected.

Other Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and teach courses in Civil Engineering.
  2. Advise students.
  3. Serve on committees.
  4. Demonstrate a passion for student success, recruitment, and retention.
The position provides opportunities to develop research collaborations with several partners, including the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience (ICAR), the School of Data Science, the School of Public Service in the Strome College of Business, Virginia Modeling Analysis & Simulation Center (VMASC), the newly established Institute for Autonomous & Connected Systems (IACS), and local government agencies such as the City of Norfolk and Naval Facilities.
